The ultimate guide for lightweight trekking. Gear advice, forest routes, and "Leave No Trace" philosophy.
Clear answers about lightweight hiking and bivouacking in the Belgian Ardennes.
Spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal. Temperatures are pleasant, the forests are beautiful, and the trails are less crowded than in the peak of summer.
Plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly (pack everything out), leave what you find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other visitors.
For the Ardennes, a lightweight tent (under 2 kg), waterproof, and with good ventilation is recommended. Single or double-wall models made of silnylon or DCF are popular for their weight and compactness.
Wild camping is generally prohibited. Prioritize designated bivouac areas, forest shelters, or campgrounds. Always check with local authorities or tourist offices.
Opt for a synthetic or goose down sleeping bag with a comfort temperature around 0°C to +5°C. Merino wool is excellent for base layers. Also consider a good insulating sleeping pad.
